Viscount @ Jimmy's Beach-c.JPG
I've never had the desire to hook up a van and travel around Australia, but if I did I think this is the baby I'd like to do it in! A big tri-axle Viscount which is now seeing out it's days at Jimmy's Beach as permanent van. There are only a handful there now, I was told most of them were removed so this one must be one of the lucky ones. I don't know the year but I would think 1970s. I've never seen one on the road being towed, but I can imagine being stuck behind one for miles in the days before overtaking lanes and multi lane main roads. It still has a nice set of plastic wheel covers.

1958 vintage caravan ad for Viscount caravans, showing two of the models available.
It is also interesting to note that they are still using their Unley South Australia address, as they opened in Sydney in 1958 as well. As a bit of a side note by the 1960's they also had a factory in Victoria, Stating they had 3 factories in 3 states. :o :o

A couple of items from Australian Motor Manual, the first March, 1964, which is more of a plug for the supplier of the Al sheeting. Makes building a van look easy.

The second is August, 1963 giving a few details of the models available.

And the third from November, 1963, shows they had all bases covered as far as materials were concerned, Al, bondwood and fibreglass.

A vintage caravan ad for the "Exciting new 1961 Viscount caravan."

Its funny as there is an ad for the Exciting new 1962 Viscount caravan shown at the top of this page and the only external difference I could see that the coloured side panel on the 62 version has been narrowed down.

1966 Motor manual magazine cover and feature article on Viscount Caravans. The article has a bit of the Viscount history and a very good description of the workings of the Viscount production line.
