The VE V6 Holden Commodore Blues

Post by reddo »

Been a bit quiet of late...

Thought i would start a storytale for yas all..

Back on the 6th November a young .. good looking bloke .. who from here on we will call ... ummmm... ME :D was heading to Hat Head Bike rally in the commy ute. Bike on the back . Vint van on the towball for acommodation ... the perfect getway combination... air cond.. power steer.. comfy seats.... cruise control...
Norton on the back.. high and dry..
Comfy Vint Van accomodation with good sized beer fridge inside tagging along behind...

Bloody bewdy mate...
Waddya reckon kiddies.. arent i the lucky one ???
Then .. all of a sudden the F-upfairys got loose under the bonnet

Got to Karuah.. about 3/4 hour north of home.. Engine light came ....on motor started shaking??
and so did ME :(
Checked all vital fluids in the engine .. all good.
Managed to drive it home at around 60/70 KPH.

Hooked up box trailer with bike on behind 64 Panel van and drove to Hat Head in just under 4 hours.
Had a very enjoyable weekend... Coupla sandfly bites ..but that was far outweighed by the goodtimes had riding and socialising.

3 days later.....
Took commy under its own steam to Mechanic. At first thought was coil pack. further investigation..No compression on No: 4 ... bent valve or similar.
Cost to remove heads / replace timing chain while in there, recond the heads , gasket set and reassemble...$5000. ... this became known as original engine #1...

So.. i search the net and got a replacement engine.from Wreckers. referred to hereon as engine #2.
cost $1500 + $1000 for mechanic to fit.. problem solved....

120 kilometres on #2 gets a visit from the F-up Fairys again..and it disintergrates on the way to hospital to see bro.
Tilt tray 12 Ks back to mechanic.
Mechanic pronounces #2 dead.. broken timing chain :(

Ring wreckers .. claim warranty. No worries. They send another replacement engine to replace the replacement engine ( #2) ... From here on called ..Engine #3.
Mechanic extracts replacement #2 and installs replacement #3... sends bill of $1000 to wrecker.

Mechanic then starts replacement#3 only to find it has bent valves as well. F-Up fairiys having a ball here aye kiddies ??...... just like original motor #1 and 1st replacement #2.

Mechanic phones wrecker... why didnt they check #3 before sending????... "Oh .. we didnt have a key to run the engine"... Well folks... thats just a god old fashion F-Up on behalf of the wrecker aye.. cant go round blamin the fairys for everything can we???

Mechanic vomits on wrecker . Demands another engine from hereon referred to as replacement engine#4 ( to replace #3 replacement that replaced #2.that replaced original #1.. must be low ks and been tested before sending.

Meanwhile #3 now removed .. no sign of #4. Mechanic hasnt been paid for installation of replacement#3 yet.???? Mechanic vomits again.

Ute now sitting in back of workshop... Wrecker has found low k motor at another wreckers but forklift has broken down.... ( F-UP Fairys couldnt wait for #4 to turn up at mechanics and went staight to wreckers ) ????    . ( i didnt know forklifts had VE Holden V6 motors too  )
So... commy ute wont be coming home for Christmas.. will spend Christmas in workshop with gapeing hole under bonnet.... plenty of dancing room under there for Fairys celebrating a successfull year of engine F-Ups :D

Meanwhile...
"ME" has forgotten he even owns a late model ute  :!: :?: ..... and judging on past history will probably continue to do so for some time yet... :D

However kiddies.. we will end the story thus far on a happy note 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

"ME" Will shout EH panno lotsa fresh oil and a filter, .. a tune up and a wash n polish for being so well behaved....
Spoken to mechanic about installing spare 186 in 2010 Holden ute... he didnt see the funny side of my suggestion    Then vomiited yet again on me.

I left the workshop .......
Stay tuned folks

More to come next year... Ho Ho Ho...

Yesterday... Thursday 22/12/2014

Was invited to the mechanics Christmas break up drink , BBQ and prawnfest..
???
Apparently been awarded "Best Customer hard luck story 2016"
Shed all cleaned up... all customers cars sent home for Christmas...... except one...

Commy ute sitting in corner enjoying its time off the road.. :(

Snags on the barbie... prawns and beer on ice.. about a dozen blokes all enjoying a drink and a yarn.. all cussing my bad luck....I join in ...
Stuffing as much beer and prawns in to me as i couold before things turn sour...and they did...

about 1 hour into the celebrations...
in comes a Toll Transport truck with a package for the mechanics...
Opens rear doors of pantech .. and there it is...
Surprise surpise..
Motor #4....

Well folks... you can well imagine the joy and excstasy that overcome the mechanics

Move the tables full of food... move the BBQ.... start up the stinking diesel forklift and unload the motor...

Reddo gets award taken off him and asked to leave the shed... never to return.. well... at least not until the second week in January 2017..

Reddo fills pockets with medium king prawns .. stuffs 6 stubbys down pants and thanks the mechanics for their understanding and hospitality over the past 2 months...
Also asks if the young apprentice would mind working back this arvo and get the motor all fitted up for me... a gesture of good will and peace amongst men at Christmas time 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
Sorta Hugs and kisses all round.... :?:

Reddo gets upended in prawn shell bag... pelted with abuse and stubbies and thrown out..

I ask about keeping the award??.. award is returned.. I am booked in at the Proctologist to have it removed today.

Ho Ho Ho..
Stay tuned for more exciting installments in 2017...

Dateline .. 9/1/2017

wreckers have paid the mechanic the $2000 owing for 2 X remove and replace engines..
Car has been released to my care .

Image

Big decision wether to risk it and drive it the 300 metres to home or push it ???
Made it home under its own steam with no red lights coming on the dash....

Now tucked away in the carport awaiting owners decision on the best way to dispose of it.... :?:
Who knows ... it might last another 100,000 ks without a problem......But i am not a gambling man.

Meanwhile .. went shopping for something with a T on the bonnet and came home with this
Image

Plain Jane 2011 petrol Hilux with 67,000 ks ....
So gawn from "No... what a feeling" to hopefully.... ." Öh what a feeling"

Hiya Col

welcome to 2017..
where the average hourly rate for a mechanic is not much shy of $100 / hour.
Hard to imagine it costs $1000 to remove and replace a motor in a ute... but thats where its at..
Keep in mind it takes 10 hours to remove all the odds and sods and get the heads off one of these P.O.S Holdens... so theres $1000
About the same amount of time to remove and refit the entire engine

Makes pulling the head off a 179 Red inline 6 in just over half an hour look good aye.

Once the heads shit a valve the motors are worthless .. wreckers dont even ask for the old ones back.
If you have the time and know how to mess about you could pull the heads off. Get the valves done.. wack in a new timing chain for probably $3000 ( bear in mind gasket set is $1000  ) and you have a motor that is good for another 100,000Ks.. all good if ya plan on keeping it long term... but.. in todays throw away society its not really an option.. for a mechanic to do the same job i was quoted $5000.

Have been lavishing care and love on the old panno... after this recent experience i now realise just how good / easy it is to be able to work on the old girl ... even though it doesnt have air and power steering......
Sometimes the simple things in life are the best.... ;)

So... i doddle over to the mechanics with trailer on behind the Toyota....
Load dead Motor #2 and dead Motor # 3 on to the trailer and head for the scrappys.
( dead motor #1 went to the local TAFE for autopsy by budding apprentice mechanics)

Wow... I couldnt believe my luck.. I now have $10.20 scrap value in my wallet... Bloody bewdy mate.. enough for 2 schooners at the local this arvo....
Ummmmm.. somehow i think it will take more than 2 schooners to heal the scars from this little episode

Oh yeah... while driving into the scappys i passed the junk mounds that people drop off just outside the gate in a compound area......i spotted one of the little motorised quads the kids run around on nowadays.. 4 stroke.. about 70cc. pretty much complete... all tyres in good condition and inflated..... not running...buggered plastic guards etc So... on with the brakes and into the trailer she went on the way back out.... should be worth at least $50 at a swapmeet......thats equivelant to 10 schooners.....now that WILL make me feel better.

lemme see... if i find another 40 of these little suckers layin around and sell em all off 8-) i might just about break even :D :D :D :D :D .... or at least pay for a really good session at the pub...... sssswwwwweeeettttt !!!!
