Highway Caravans. (Victoria.)

Post by plumby »

Highway Caravans.

Factory.
343 New St.
Brighton. Victoria.

Showroom.
188 Nepean Highway.
Garden Vale. Victoria.

Discovered a "Highway" brand caravan last w/e, situated on a property in NE Victoria. Appears not to a brand that this site knows of. A tag on the NSF corner says specifically that the "shell" was built by Highway Caravans of Brighton, Vic. Presumably you took it away as that and fitted your own plywood skin?
Have some photos: let's see if they upload.

Hi Phil.
And welcome to the ourtouringpast.com forum.
Highway caravans made completed caravans or you could buy a "shell" that was lined on the outside so all you had to do was fit off the inside and paint the whole van.
I dug up a brochure and scanned the cover for you.
Do you have any more photos ? I would say the van that you have found would be from about the mid 1950's but if you have more photos especially of the inside I may be able to narrow it down.

Cheers.
Richard.

Here's two advertisements for Highway Caravans, the first from 1952 indicates they do just about anything you want in the way of caravan bits, including building to Modern Motor plans.

The second is very plain, from Modern Motor from April 1955 and gives a couple of model names as well as still doing custom work and supplying kits.
