1968 Franklin Freeway

Post by vintagevan68 »

Hi all vintage van lovers
My name is Lee and I have a 1968 Franklin Freeway in original condition. I need some advice about leaks please. The previous owner attempted to fix the leaks, but unfortunately he had Parkinson's, which is not funny until you see the photos! Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Lee

Hi Lee
And welcome to the ourtouringpast.com forum. ;) ;)
Looks as though you have picked up a great little van there, and I see what you mean about the silicone.

Cured silicone would have to be one of the hardest things to try an remove, and if you havnt removed 100% of it you will never be able to paint over it successfully. Over the years I have found the best way to remove it is to cut or scrape away as much as possible and then using something like thinners and tons of elbow grease to rub the remainder off. The only thing is that this is not always possible depending what the silicone has been put over, as you wouldn't want to scrape away at highly polished aluminium etc.

Recently I had a chat with someone that used a solvent called Xylene to remove cured silicone successfully, it is available at most specialist paint shops but be careful with it as it is a bit nasty so wear your personal protective equipment ( mask, goggles and gloves etc )and keep children away.

There is also a Selleys product available that is a silicone sealant remover which can be found at this link http://www.selleys.com.au/sealants/silicone/remover/ It is basically gelled sulphuric acid so again be careful follow the directions wear your PPL and test a small out of the way area first to make sure it doesn't "eat" away the aluminium..

Good luck with it.
