Caravan Radios

Post by griffin »

This for the moment is not about radios in caravans, but radios that look like caravans.
At the 'Fun Museums' in Cowra last year I noticed a great looking radio which I though had a great caravan shape to it.

The green paint looked like it might have been added over the original Bakelite at some time and I just loved the style, I've not seen one like it before.

Then the other day while 'Troving' I ran across an advertisement for a BATYPHONE Caravan Mantle radio in the Sunday Times (Perth) 4-6-1939 and it is a beaut caravan shape, but not intended for use in a caravan.

I've certainly never heard of the brand which is by C.S. Baty & Co., possibly a Perth business.

So, I wonder if there are any others out there??

Radios were advertised as a feature in several caravans offered for sale before WWII, but I've not been able to find out if they were a special radio or a house type adapted for the purpose.
